Home (not) Alone

Today marks the beginning of the Great Corona Closing. No school for kids, no church on Sunday, no sports to watch, no meetings to attend. The social distancing list goes on & on. And no toilet paper to spare, apparently.

So here we are, at home, the whole fam jam. I normally get pre-summer anxiety (PSA) when I think about all the time we will be together and how to structure it. But I didn’t even have time to prepare for the Great Corona Closing, and I imagine the anxiety for most parents is through the roof. Or maybe not. Maybe this feels different, and an unexpected break in the train that seems to never stop. Right now I am enjoying the halting train, at least for the official day one, hour two of my morning.

Husband and I talked about what a unique time this is to connect with each other and our kids. The amount of time that opened up in our schedules is unheard of, and the question is what will we do with it. There will be a fair amount of TV watching and video game enjoying for sure, but we do want to connect with each other. We want to engage and find creative ways to know and love one another. So what do we do?

We gather in the family room and ask a few questions. We create space for each other. Space to be seen and known and reminded that our presence matters. It’s a worthwhile practice, and fits with our goals in the Known Project so we decided to share what we are doing with you. We will be providing online one question a day as a point of connection during this Great Corona Closing, and hope it leads to greater seeing and knowing each other. Check out our next post for Connecting During Corona Question #1.
